The much anticipated Mall of Qatar, initially projected to open by the First Quarter of 2016, will finally open its doors to the world by the end of the Third Quarter of 2016. Dubbed as Qatar’s Hallmark Project and a recipient of the project of the Year recognition by the Construction Innovations Award, the Mall of Qatar has all the right reasons to push through with its Third Quarter 2016 grand opening. Some experts attributed delays in the grand opening of the much touted Mall of Qatar to the declining oil prices which certainly dented luxury spending of Chinese and Russian tourists in neighboring Dubai. Shem Krey, Deputy Managing Director, said that the delay in opening has nothing to do with the oil price slide.
Krey further explained that the delay was necessary in order to accommodate the increased number of global retailers who are jockeying for prime space in the 500 plus retail shops in 25.6 hectares of leasable space on the Mall of Qatar’s three levels . Mall of Qatar’s turnkey contractor UrbaCon Trading and Contracting (UCC) has to make sure that the individual retail shop designs will be in accordance with the design requirements of each Mall of Qatar tenant. With more than 90 percent of its tenancy space already filled , each of these globally-renowned retailers requires highly customized storefronts to project their own unique brand image. As it is the aim of both Mall of Qatar and UCC to provide the best entertainment experience for Qatari residents and visitors alike, both organizations are working really hard to make sure that everything is all set even before the curtain unveils by the Third Quarter of 2016.
Moutaz Al Khayyat , CEO of UCC, is looking forward to this project bringing a great boom in the retail sector considering its location in the heart of the central business district Al Rayyan Gate, a community surrounded by upscale modern designed buildings and infrastructures capturing the attention of both locals and tourists. With the 40,000seat Al Rayyan FIFA World Cup Stadium, Education City, Qatar National Convention Centre, and Qatar Foundation, the entire Al Rayyan Gate concept has been hailed as the perfect example of how residential developments can be successfully integrated with a mix of business, social, sports, and leisure districts allowing residents to live, work, play, and enjoy life to the fullest without necessarily going elsewhere.
“We build trust,” Al Khayyat said, and this has been very evident in the way the Mall of Qatar has taken shape. Al Khayyat explains, “UCC’s commitment is towards the attainment of the objectives set by our clients. We are fortunate enough to be trusted by leading business organizations. And as such, given this particular privilege means that we have to take care of it so that the general public will benefit in the long run.” The young CEO also pointed the need for trust towards its employees as well as the communities it serves. This has been the winning formula for UCC’s success in the general contracting industry. Launched only in 2011, UrbaCon Trading and Contracting (UCC) has shown its mettle in creating a niche of its own in the very competitive industry of design-build contracting. Ranked 135 in the world's Top 250 in 2015 by ENR, UCC's penchant for delivering trustworthy projects is truly awe-inspiring, to say the least. Al Khayyat explained about the success of UCC, "UCC sets itself apart by successfully performing and delivering a wide range of highly diverse projects based on a design build turnkey basis. Additionally, all projects are ensured to be completed in a safe and professional manner. This means that the project has to be completed on time, within budget, and in strict compliance with the world's highest standards of quality and excellence."
UCC, with the Mall of Qatar project undoubtedly at the center of the nation's economic development, is more than honored to be at the helm of this spectacular milestone in the nation's development. Al Khayyat said, “The Mall of Qatar is an important project to provide an environment where business can flourish while catering to the social and human development of the nation.” With the FIFA World Cup just 6 years away from gracing the shores of Qatar, the mall is expected to provide world class shopping and entertainment experience for the world’s most discerning customers. By the Third Quarter of 2016, Mall of Qatar will open a one of a kind 19 screen Cinemacity complex with the world’s largest 3D laser projection IMAX theatre, including six VIP screens on 3 levels, complete with an intheatre food service. Covering 500,000 sqm of space, Mall of Qatar’s Family Entertainment Complex will feature endless family fun and entertainment for all. Mall of Qatar will also feature the world's first mall based professional live theatre with 360 degree shows and acts that will be performed on the Festival Stage at the Mall's Center Oasis. This multi-lift rotating stage comes complete with theatrical lighting and sounds to provide a one of a kind experience to Qatari residents and visitors alike. The Mall will feature the widest selection of global brands and more than a hundred fine dining and other food and beverage establishments. Curio Collection by Hilton will also provide an in-house 5star luxury hotel to cater to guests' accommodation needs.
The Mall of Qatar is expected to be a landmark one stop destination for lifestyle, fashion, entertainment, and food. And with Qatar’s rise as a global economic powerhouse, UrbaCon Trading and Contracting is more than proud and privileged to be part of Qatar's promising future, for both its residents and its visitors alike.
