The first exhibition of its kind in Europe, THE PHILIPPINES features 310 works of pre-colonial Filipino art, ranging from sculpture, armor, jewelry, textiles, and costumes, selected from within major public and private collections in the Philippines, United States and Europe.
Consisting of approximately 7,000 islands, the Philippines is a civilization whose foundations are rooted in reciprocity. Whether symbolic or commercial, this custom of exchange serves as a framework for Filipino culture.
Divided into two sections, this exhibition explores the traditional artworks from the mountainous Northern Highlands region, examining deities, wealth, magic, poetry and warriors, as well as artworks inspired by the prominent the shipping trade on the Southern coasts and islands, with influences originating from India, Indonesia, Arabia and China.
This exciting and innovative cultural art exhibition will be taking place April 9 through July 14, 2013 at the Musee du Quai Branly.
