The success story of French artist and set designer Frédéric Clopet is inspiring simply because he is of that rare breed of men who will not settle for something less than everything that he wants. While such an individual could sometimes come across selfish or arrogant, Clopet is only genuine. He grasps life for all that he can squeeze out of it. Growing up in the metropolitan of Paris, Clopet loved art, as many children do. His days were spent drawing a variety of figures, with little realization that his adult career would later benefit from this purest form of play. Recognizing talent in him, his family sent him to study at the Beaux Arts school for children when he was just 11 years old. His interest expanded from there, and in his youth he broadened his studies by focusing on interior design at the National School of Fine Arts in Angers, France, from which he graduated in 1985.
From there, his path began quite ordinarily. He got a good paying job at an architectural firm, but after years of working there he began to find it mundane. It drained the passion in him, and that was something he couldn’t stand for. While walking in the city on day, he learned about a contest for the biennial Salon des Artistes Décorateur at the Grand Palais in Paris. He decided he would try his hand at entering some of the artwork he made in the past, particularly a series of cartoon chairs. To his surprise, he won. He was awarded a coveted position among other young designers and thus began his career in design.
