Art New York, along with the debut of its sister fair, CONTEXT New York, returned for the second year yesterday on May 3 at Pier 94 with a VIP Preview event attracting nearly 5,500 art world enthusiasts and members of the media. The two highly-anticipated fairs showcased artwork from more than 150 galleries representing nearly 1,200 artists from 50 countries, effectively launching New York Art Week, the pinnacle of New York’s art and cultural season.
Invited guests were able to experience the fairs prior to the public, and see the world’s finest works available to the market from both the 20th and 21st centuries. They enjoyed passed hors d'oeuvres during the VIP Reception by Butterfield Market and signature cocktails created for the event, including the Art New York Margarita and CONTEXT Lemonade. Sponsors for the event included VOSS Artesian Water, New York Academy of Art, Langham Place, the Children’s Museum of the Arts, the Bronx Museum and more.
The opening saw tremendous success in sales, foreshadowing continued high sales for the remainder of the week. Top artwork purchased at Art New York includes The Flower series by Suh Joeng Min from JanKossen Contemporary, Lucky Koi and Impressionist Fish from Adrien Brody’s “Hooked” series in conjunction with Benrimon Projects and The Corners of New York commissioned and curated by Joe Ficalora, the founder of The Bushwick Collective, and presented by Tansey Contemporary of Santa Fe. Proceeds from this installation benefit the Perry J. Cohen Foundation. The fairs not only display an unprecedented selection of works from around the world, but also include programs by internationally known curators, informative interactive booths, and discussion panels featuring prominent art influencers.
The inaugural edition of CONTEXT New York will take place May 3 - 8, 2016 in Manhattan. The fair will join Art New York at Pier 94, located on the Hudson River at 12th Avenue at 55th Street. A VIP Private Preview will kick off art week in New York City on Tuesday, May 3, before Frieze's opening. CONTEXT New York and Art New York will be open to the general public, May 4 - 8. CONTEXT New York will provide collectors with a leading alternative fair to acquire important works of contemporary art.
Like its hugely successful sister fair CONTEXT Art Miami, which launched during Miami Art Week in 2012, CONTEXT New York’s open atmosphere will create meaningful dialogue between artists, galleries and collectors while providing the ultimate platform for the presentation of mid-career, emergent and cutting-edge talent by emerging and established galleries. The fair will feature eighty international galleries, vetted by the CONTEXT Selection Committee. CONTEXT New York will provide a unique and alternative opportunity for leading primary dealers and their artists to be marketed and promoted internationally during one of the most important weeks for contemporary art in New York City.
