Southern Guild Brings African Design to Miami

Southern Guild was established in 2008 to provide a platform for collectible, limited-edition South African design, showcasing work by the most recognised names in the country and cultivating the careers of emerging contemporary designers. In early 2014 Southern Guild also successfully organised the inaugural Guild, Africa’s First International Design Fair, during World Design Capital Cape Town. Plans for Guild 2015 are now underway, and details will be available soon.

Southern Guild Flooded Design Miami with Breath-Taking African Design

South African design is artisanal, handmade and cerebral and our designers work in a very personal, exploratory way, with deep cultural relevance and little interest in passing trends. Southern Guild encourages collaboration and discourse, which aims to stimulate and provoke the local design industry, and has become a benchmark for quality and originality. The gallery cohesively and comprehensively showcases the most important contemporary design from South Africa, at the best fairs around the world, with the ongoing support of AbsaPrivate Banking.

For Design Miami 2014, Southern Guild aimed to convey the multi-faceted nature of South African design, which is layered with story telling, political allusion, historical and cultural references and a drawing down into a primal and earth-bound essence. These impulses are expressed through sculptural and graphic forms that seem simultaneously familiar and strange.

Southern Guild at Design Miami 2014 was made possible by the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The DTI has a mission to support and facilitate the development of sustainable enterprises and to promote investment, competitiveness and export opportunities through effective and accessible programmes: “A dynamic industrial, globally competitive South African economy, characterised by inclusive growth and development, decent employment and equity, built on the full potential of all citizens.”
