Carwan Gallery is proud to present at Design Miami/ the newly commissioned work from the Italian architect Vincenzo De Cotiis. ‘Déchainements’ is a collection of limited edition tables, rugs and glass lighting, inspired by a trip to Beirut, Lebanon. The collection has been created thanks to the special collaborations of Venini for the handmade Murano glass lightings and Iwan Maktabi for the oxydized rug.
“I have thought very often after my return from Beirut how this trip has impressed me... I see the lines of the architecture blurred in the traces of a lost urbanism. Life is happening at night, the “reconstruction” is more evident in the dark. The awakening is overwhelming, between uneasiness and amazement, an organic flow of a culture that wants to revive. The construction or rather continued reconstruction of the city isn’t expressed by any clear set of rules. It’s an architectural landscape that’s layered in different aesthetics and time periods that are vague and worn by time. All of this fascinated me... I have thought of a decomposition of elements… The architecture, especially, is an explosion of conflicting forms translated in objects devoted to a contemporary way of living.Disconnected tables, “exploded” illuminations, photographic imprint rugs, brass fusions, ceramics and glass, all interpretations of reassembled and deconstructed architectures. References methodically confused and clear opposites yet coming together like the contrasts of a city that is rooted in a devotion to construct a vision of contemporary culture." Vincenzo De Cotiis.
About Vincenzo De Cotiis
Trained at the Politecnico di Milano, Vincenzo De Cotiis combines the architect’s sense of space with sensitivity towards tactile surfaces. He forges pure forms - either design objects or spaces by following an organic process that allows the final product to retain traces of the process. Crystalline, pure lines are charged with a new energy in the counterpoint of textures and parts. Materials - precious, raw, sometimes wild and always with an intense and evocative power - characterize every single project. De Cotiis’ aesthetic is all about perfect imperfection. Some of his studio’s recent works include: design projects for Ceccotti Collezioni, Baxter, Busnelli and Rossana; interior architecture for private clients and commercial spaces. Among the most recent projects, Antonia Concept Store in Milan, I.T Hong Kong, Excelsior Milano in Milan, Verona and the new one in Rome and the new concept for the Sportmax boutiques hotellerie, as perfectly expressed by the Straf Hotel in Milan; experimental design, expressed through Progetto Domestico, a series of limited edition furnishing pieces, leaning more towards sculpture than design.
