'Monuments Men’ Brings Focus to Art's Value to Culture

EYES IN Magazine Editor-in-Chief Vivian Van Dijk is live at Berlinale. Vivian screened 'The Monuments Men' at the press conference with director and lead, George Clooney, and cast members, including Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Jean Dujardin. Vivian writes, "Whatever critics say about the The Monuments Men, for sure the film has been and will serve as a trigger to reveal more about lost and stolen treasures in the arts.

"It is and will be a foundation for more research and many debates about these topics. Not only about lost and stolen treasures of art during WWII, but also during other wars and catastrophic events. It took guts to direct and produce a movie like this. To touch a subject that is delicate and that is showing the cultural aspects that are often forgotten in wars in where lives are at stake, but where a forgotten history indirectly could lead to more lost lives and values of living in the future.

"I'm very happy to have seen this film and, on the contrary to what other critics say, I very much appreciate that as an art lover so many big actors' names have given their name to this movie. Their dedication shows that they felt touched by the story and the very important subject of art preservation and historical conservation of brilliant creators from all around the world."

Synopsis of The Monuments Men

Not long after US American and British troops land in Normandy, Hitler issues the order that no significant works of art shall fall into enemy hands. Any piece German troops are unable to take with them or hide in secret stashes is to be destroyed. The Allies refuse to sit back and watch this barbaric act take place; instead they put together an ingenious and skillful platoon of ‘monuments men’ who are given the task of going behind enemy lines to identify and secure any endangered works of art.

And so, led by art expert Frank Stokes, this group of museum directors, curators and art historians set out. They soon find themselves not only up against Nazi officers keen to adorn their private collections with a few art treasures, but also having to contend with both ignorance and arrogance in their own ranks. Based on Robert M Edsel’s book, the film describes the most dangerous treasure hunt in history. Director George Clooney, who also appears in the leading role, successfully combines moments of comedy, tragedy and pathos in order to sing the praises of the men who managed to save these monumental works of art.

The Monuments Men premiers in the US (in NY at 7 pm Friday) and enjoyed the world premiere during Berlin Film Festival in the afternoon.
